Azaleas - Rhododendron japonicum

Joyous colour in the parks

Brightly blooming azaleas were among Bengt Schalin's favourite shrubs. They are slow-growing and quite demanding, but their blossoms are so delightful that they earn their place as the treats in the park. There are still some old azaleas in Helsinki's parks with double flowers. These cultivars were utilised in the azalea plant breeding programme at the University of Helsinki in the late 1980s. The first Finnish azalea cultivars will come onto the market in a few years. There are fine old azaleas in Kirjailijanpuisto Park, Hakasalmi Park and Mäyräpuisto Park in Herttoniemi, which was designed by Schalin. Visitors can admire Finnish cultivars in the Rhododendron Park at Haaga and the Siltamäki Area Park. Azaleas have also been planted in Aarrepuisto Park in Vesala.
